There are wine lovers, there are wine experts—and then there’s Stephen Walker, a sommelier whose story goes far beyond bottles and bouquets. A longtime Eagle resident, Stephen is a man whose life has been transformed by something far more intoxicating than wine: a deep awakening, a clear sense of intuition, and an unwavering desire to create unforgettable experiences for others.
“I went from a no-hope life to something I never could have imagined,” Stephen shares. After nearly a decade in personal and financial hardship—including facing imminent death six times—he made a sharp pivot. Instead of joining his father’s successful business, Stephen’s life took an unexpected and humbling turn toward service. “I thought being a server was beneath me,” he says. But as fate would have it, when a position opened up unexpectedly, Stephen stepped in—and the rest is history.
What started as a reluctant serving job transformed into a celebrated career in wine. Stephen became a sommelier, and eventually, Sommelier of the Year by the California Restaurant Writers. But to him, it was never about the accolades. “It was always about touching people’s hearts,” he explains. “In a Dining Out newspaper article, part of the article that meant the most to me was when the writer said, ‘He not only knows wines, but in addition has a marvelous sense of humor that immediately puts one at ease.’
Stephen has brushed shoulders with icons from Smokey Robinson and Mario Andretti to Salvatore Ferragamo of IL Borro Winery and Imelda Marcos—experiences that would seem impossible to a younger version of himself. But each encounter stems from one powerful trait: the willingness to act on intuition. “I’ve learned to respond to those quiet nudges—discernment, I call it. Even when it makes no sense, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.”
One of his most touching stories? A spontaneous inner prompting told him to take his son to the Indy 500—despite their strained relationship. That trip not only led to a private tour with racing legend Mario Andretti but also helped restore the bond between father and son. His son, once in deep rebellion, is now a successful social worker helping others find their way.

Now living in Eagle, Stephen continues to pour his passion into high-end wine events that marry soul, storytelling, and hospitality. His most recent event featured Salvatore Ferragamo and left guests emotionally moved—and lining up to buy wine. “People kept saying they felt something. It wasn’t just a tasting—it was an experience,” he says.
Through his business, Unforgettable Events, Stephen curates these heartfelt wine gatherings with intention, humor, and humility. When asked about Idaho wines, he enjoys and supports the local wine scene and is glad it is expanding. And thanks to longtime connections and a strong sense of purpose, Stephen is preparing to bring in some of the top renowned wines to the valley.
At the heart of it all, Stephen is a reminder that the best life is not always the one we planned—it’s the one we say “yes” to when we listen closely. “I started paying attention. And everything changed.”
Stephen and his wife Becky will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Their daughter Jessica and son-in-law Darrin; and their son Jeremy, daughter-in-law Lashai, and first grandchild Lance all live nearby.
