Attention designers, artists, and fashionistas! Design a look made from jeans inspired by your genes, send your creation down the runway at BAM’s ART OF FASHION SHOW: Genes, and win $500!
In conjunction with the upcoming exhibition Geraldine Ondrizek: Chromosome Painting II, Boise Art Museum invites designers and artists of all experience levels to participate and compete in our Genes Design Contest. This year’s design contest celebrates the work of artist Geraldine Ondrizek, who creates works of art inspired by genetic research and chromosome mapping. Her large-scale, textile Chromosome Painting II is made from long panels, each printed with human chromosome maps. Ondrizek works closely with genetic scientists to trace ethnic identities, portray life spans, and depict genetically inherited conditions through textile portraits, color patterns, and sequences that metaphorically portray what she calls “our coats of many colors.”
Inspired by Ondrizek’s subject matter, BAM’s Genes Design Contest encourages designers to showcase their talents by working with denim (jeans) to create a garment inspired by their own genes.
Garments must be constructed from denim – any color, deconstructed and repurposed, or cut from yardage off the bolt. Looks must be inspired by genetic makeup, identity, heredity, family traits, or DNA and be wearable/walkable on the runway. The competition is open to the first 30 entries. Contestants can wear their own designs or provide a model. Limited to one entry per designer/team. Teams are limited to three people, including the model. Contestants and models must be 18 or older. Final work must be completed and delivered to BAM on Monday, April 24, 2017. Voting takes place at the ART OF FASHION SHOW: Genes on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at BAM.
