Embracing Adversity

The Inspiring Journey of Lauren and Jennifer Havel

A compelling story of passion, resilience, and creative brilliance unfolds through the lives of Lauren and Jennifer Havel. Jennifer, a seasoned screenwriter, and her 19-year-old daughter, Lauren, a burgeoning filmmaker, have faced personal and professional challenges that would have deterred many. Yet, they continue to shine brightly in the cinematic world, their spirits undaunted by adversity.Ā

Lauren’s filmmaking journey began at 13 when she attended her first film camp. Her inaugural short film, ā€œI Hate Kate,ā€ an anti-bullying piece, set the stage for a career driven by purpose and passion. ā€œIt took six months to make, and it was an incredible experience. It wasn’t just about making a film; it was about creating something meaningful,ā€ Lauren recalls.Ā

The transition from homeschooling to full-time filmmaking was seamless for Lauren. ā€œHomeschooling became my film school,ā€ she explains. This unique educational approach allowed her to dive deep into her craft, honing her skills in various areas such as lighting and directing. Her subsequent projects, including her first feature film on screen addiction and a deeply personal film on dyslexia titled ā€œNot Broken,ā€ showcased her evolving expertise and storytelling prowess.Ā

Jennifer, the supportive and talented screenwriter behind Lauren’s films, has been a pillar of strength throughout their journey. However, their latest project, ā€œThe Ground Beneath Our Feet,ā€ proved to be their most challenging yet. During its production, Lauren faced the heartbreak of losing both her grandparents. Jennifer, meanwhile, got diagnosed with breast cancer, an ordeal that tested the family’s resilience to its limits. ā€œIt felt like evil was working against good,ā€ Jennifer says, reflecting on the irony of the film that explores what happens when you take God out of a nation and morals are lost.Ā

Despite these personal tragedies, Lauren and Jennifer persevered. Coordinating over 200 actors and extras, managing conflicting schedules, and rewriting scenes on the fly due to unforeseen circumstances became their new normal. Their unwavering commitment to their ā€˜calling’, craft and each other carried them through the darkest times.Ā

Ā ā€œThe Ground Beneath Our Feet,ā€ set in the fifties, required meticulous research and a nuanced understanding of history. Feedback from viewers who lived through the 1950s validated their efforts. Lauren shares, ā€œPeople who grew up during that era said it was very accurate.ā€Ā

The film’s religious themes resonated with a diverse audience, including those with no religious affiliation. ā€œIt’s a very hopeful film,ā€ Lauren explains. ā€œIn a world filled with hopelessness, it offers something everyone needs.ā€Ā

Their journey underscores the power of art to heal, connect, and bring light even in the face of overwhelming odds.Ā

In the end, the Havels’ story is not just about making films; it’s about embracing life’s challenges with grace and determination, proving that passion and love can triumph over adversity. Their tale serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for aspiring filmmakers and artists everywhere.Ā
