Eagle Hills Church Blood Drive: Growing Stronger, Giving More

The annual Eagle Hills Church Blood Drive in Eagle, Idaho, is back on March 31, and this year marks a significant milestone. What once started in 1999 with just five donors has grown into a community-wide effort to save lives. Last year, the drive welcomed 82 donors, but this year, the goal has expanded to 111 donors—and we’re aiming even higher to surpass La Grand, Idaho, which boasts 150 donors.

This event isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the people who make it happen year after year. The stories behind these donors are inspiring, showing the power of generosity and community spirit.

    Lifelong Dedication to Giving

One remarkable donor has been giving blood since he was 18 years old—and now, at 60 years old, Dan Roberts has donated an astounding 184 pints (34 gallons)! A longtime Eagle resident of 29 years, he enjoys donating blood and even likens it to car maintenance:

“Recycle your blood like you change the oil in your car.”

    Dan Roberts

Dan’s passion for donating began when his mother battled cancer and required lifesaving transfusions. Since then, he has considered each donation a way of “paying a debt” to help others in need. He also finds it fascinating to track where his donations go, knowing they make a real difference.

    Age Is Just a Number

Another inspiring donor is a 92-year-old Eagle woman who is legally blind. Despite her challenges, she remains committed to giving back. Each year, volunteers pick her up and bring her to the blood drive so she can continue her mission of helping others. She describes the experience as giving her a “renewed sense of purpose.”

    New Donor, Lasting Impact

For Evelyn Self, a Boise native who returned to the area, this year’s drive marks her one-year anniversary of donating at Eagle Hills Church. Her journey with blood donation became personal when her nephew needed blood for a kidney transplant. Reflecting on her experience, she says:

“Money doesn’t buy everything, and blood is very precious.”
